The Living Room

A place to relax, a space to connect from dusk till dawn.

Capella Culturist

Historians, guardians and native explorers of Shanghai

The Living Room

Found within the walls of our Shikumen sanctuary, The Living Room brings authentic memories of Old Shanghai to new minds. Built in the 1930s as a gated community for wealthy traders and expatriates, the cosy space retains its exclusivity today only for Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li guests to enjoy.

Drop by in the day and cross paths with fellow discoverers over delectable fresh cakes and a speciality curated tea selection, before embarking on a journey through the heritage district of Xuhui to uncover the ‘Paris of the East’. When you regroup in the evening, accompanying your tales of the day are a curated selection of wine and champagne. The Living Room also offers solace for those seeking quiet time alone. Reflection of the neighbourhood's rich past is an extensive collection of Chinese and European literary titles for you to get lost in while sipping tea.

Capella Culturist

Our Capella Culturist draw inspiration from the hotel’s remarkable location filled with traditional charms and modern vibrancy to curate an unforgettable experience. They share their passion of the historic neighbourhood behind our red walls and can set you up on an exploratory bike tour around the neighbourhood and its sycamore-lined boulevards filled with romantic open-air cafes.

Ask them what defines Shanghai’s gastronomic scene and get ready to be entertained by a long list of the city must-eats, from traditional back-alley eateries serving xiao long bao to underrated restaurants only clued-in locals know about. Movers and shakers of the city, they can connect you to unique places, people and experiences including a local grandmother who will pass down her family’s multi-generational culinary secrets to anyone who is open to learn.

Your Capella Culturist will provide a full itinerary of activities and events hosted in the Living Room during your stay.

Capella Curates

At the heart of the Capella philosophy is our visionary curation of culture and experience.

Our Capella Culturist have spent time scouring Shanghai, leaving no leaf unturned in our quest to provide you with unforgettable moments, immersing into the local community to engage and discover local heritage and culture, discovering new skills, and meeting some fascinating people along the way.

We understand escapism beyond the simple indulgence of travel and seek, through knowledge, empathy and respect for our surroundings, to create ‘Capella Curates’; a selection of experiences designed to become lifelong memories.

Capella Youth

Building a strong sense of community for a sustainable future.

We are privileged to be entrusted with such exceptional destinations and finding ways to reflect and respect the local culture are vital to our work. As custodian of the community, we are dedicated in the enrichment of our surroundings and the lives of our community, acting as mentors to youths and participating in school initiatives to empower them to create a better tomorrow.

Baking up a successful career

At Capella Shanghai, we believe in enabling underprivileged youths with the skills needed to forge a promising future. Leveraging on our culinary expertise, we have collaborated with Shanghai Young Bakers to groom and set the stage for the next generation of boulangers. Budding pastry chefs aged between 17 and 23 years old will be able to master sophisticated French techniques and enhance their baking finesse under the tutelage of Executive Chef Romain Chapel of one-Michelin-star Le Comptoir De Pierre Gagnaire. Aside from developing their culinary talents, our traineeship also aims to strengthen their confidence and nurture them into becoming future leaders of tomorrow.

In Shanghai, gastronomy tourism is thriving and therein lies a multitude of career opportunities. We hope that by supporting young bakers in their journey of growth, they are able to make their mark in the industry and financially support their loved ones.
